SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah has announced a new contract extension for head football coach Kyle Whittingham keeping him the head man of the Utes through December 2023.

Later today, Utah opens spring football practices and it will be Whittingham’s 15th with the program as head coach.

Last July, Utah hired Mark Harlan to be the school’s new athletic director and under his new boss, Whittingham led Utah to their first Pac-12 South title and appearance in the Pac-12 Championship against Washington.

Since 2005, Whittingham’s first year as head coach, the Utes have gone 120-61 overall and it’s included an undefeated season in 2008 in which Whittingham was National Coach of the Year.

2019 marks the 25th anniversary since Whittingham joined the Utah football staff where he was hired to be a defensive line coach. Whittingham is one of the three longest-tenured head coaches in all of college football next to Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz.

Utah opens up the 2019 season on the road at rival BYU on Thursday, August 29th, 2019.
