8 Utes Among 10 Locals Drafted Into NFL

PHILADELPHIA—A school-record eight Utah Utes were drafted throughout the three-day NFL Draft, including six in rounds 4-7 on Saturday. One former BYU Cougar and one former Utah State Aggie were selected as well.

Garett Bolles took center stage Thursday night when he was picked 20th overall by the Denver Broncos. Marcus Williams was selected by the New Orleans Saints Friday night in the second round, 42nd overall.

Joe Williams’ fourth-round selection by the San Francisco 49ers was an early surprise Saturday, followed shortly thereafter by BYU’s Jamaal Williams to the Green Bay Packers.

Former offensive lineman Isaac Asiata went to Miami in the fifth round, after which defensive back Brian Allen went 173rd to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Center J.J. Dielman, whose 2016 season ended after an injury, was picked by the Cincinnati Bengals three spots after Allen.

Sam Tevi completed the crew of Utes offensive linemen who were drafted after being invited to the NFL Scouting Combine when the Los Angeles Chargers picked him in the sixth round. Pass rush specialist Pita Taumoepenu earned a spot with the 49ers to join Joe Williams in the sixth round.

Former Utah State running back Devante Mays joined Jamaal Williams in the Packers backfield after a seventh round selection.
