Utah Hangs on in Provo to Win Second Straight Rivalry Game

PROVO—The Utah Runnin’ Utes prevailed in a stiff battle with rival BYU in Provo with a final score of 65-61. It was Utah’s second consecutive win over the Cougars, and extended the Utes to a 7-1 record as BYU fell to 7-3.

It ended up being the Delon Wright Show as he finished with 18 points, going 6-10 from the field, 6-7 from the free throw line, and had 11 rebounds and 2 steals in 37 minutes. Brekkott Chapman ended up with 8 points, but ran into foul trouble early, and finished with only 13 minutes. Jakob Poeltl finished with 6 points and 7 rebounds.

The Utes got early momentum in the first ten minutes, getting out to a 13-point lead at 24-11. BYU fought back leading up to halftime, and took the lead on a Haws three-pointer with 34 seconds left in the half. It was 31-30 Cougars at the break.

The Utah defense showed up strong, combining for 6 blocks and 5 steals, as well as several shot-altering plays that won’t show up in the box score.

Utah took the lead back just under 3 minutes into the second half, and didn’t lose it again. The Cougars fought back, trimming the lead to as little as 3 with 1:14 remaining, and again with :18 remaining.

Some missed free throws kept the Utes and their fans on the edge of their seats, but they made some big ones as well. The Cougars tried desperately to cut the lead again in the final seconds, but to no avail.

Tyler Haws led BYU with 23 points, going 9-22 from the field with 3-5 from three-point range. Kyle Collinsworth ended up with 17 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists.

Next up for the Runnin’ Utes are the Kansas Jayhawks this Saturday in Kansas City. Tipoff will be at 1:15pm MT.
