REAL SALT LAKE FALLS 2-1 AT VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC

VANCOUVER, BC (Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014) – Real Salt Lake (13-7-10, 49 points, West #3), fell 2-1 to Vancouver Whitecaps FC (9-8-13, 40 points, West #5) at BC Place on Saturday afternoon.

Real Salt Lake took the lead in the 57th minute when DF Nat Borchers headed home a corner kick taken by MF Javier Morales. RSL was unable to sustain the lead however, conceding twice as Vancouver Captain Pedro Morales converted his second PK attempt in the 62nd minute and notched the game-winner in the 78th minute to grab the win.

The match started off open with half-chances for both clubs, but Vancouver registered the first real opportunity in the fourth minute. Whitecaps FW Sebastian Fernandez worked his way into the box on the left side and flicked-on a pass to Pedro Morales just inside the six yard box. The open Vancouver Captain one-timed a shot that flew just high over the crossbar.

RSL Captain Kyle Beckerman had a nice look from distance in the 30th minute. The Claret-and-Cobalt earned a free kick 30 yards out that the USMNT midfielder stepped up to take. The RSL veteran tried his luck on goal, firing a swerving shot on frame, but the attempt proved to be an easy collection for Vancouver GK David Ousted.

Real Salt Lake backup GK Jeff Attinella, came up huge for the Claret-and-Cobalt in the 45th minute, saving Pedro Morales’ penalty kick to keep the score level at 0-0. RSL FW Alvaro Saborio was whistled for the controversial PK in the 45th minute, when Chapman called the Costa Rican international for a foul in the box during a Vancouver corner kick. Attinella bailed RSL out, stopping the PK by correctly diving to his right and blocking Morales’ shot.

Real Salt Lake almost took the lead in the 57th minute. RSL MF Luis Gil worked his way into the box on the left side and played a square pass to RSL’s Morales at the center of the area. The Argentine flicked the ball and half-volleyed a shot that forced a great diving save from Ousted, pushing the ball out for a corner kick.

RSL went on to score from the ensuing corner kick in the same minute. Morales took the corner, whipping a ball into the box that Borchers headed to the far post to give the Claret-and-Cobalt a 1-0 lead.

The lead did not last long however, as RSL was called for a second penalty kick in the 62nd minute. Claret-and-Cobalt DF Carlos Salcedo was whistled for the foul in the box on Vancouver FW Erik Hurtado. The Vancouver Captain got a chance to redeem himself, as Morales coolly slotted his second PK attempt into the bottom left corner.

Real Salt Lake’s Attinella could not dwell long on the equalizer though, as he was forced to come up with a big save in the 65th minute. Vancouver started the play on the right flank, playing a low ball into the area that Vancouver’s Hurtado connected with from close-range. Attinella made a fantastic one-handed save, diving to his left to preserve the 1-1 score line.

Real Salt Lake had a fantastic chance to retake the lead in the 76th minute. Morales started the play, finding RSL substitute FW Sebastian Jaime in behind Vancouver’s back line with a long ball from the midfield line. On the breakaway, Jaime drew Ousted out of the area but the Vancouver ‘keeper made himself big and thwarted the Argentine’s attempt to maneuver around him.

The Whitecaps went on to take the lead in the 78th minute. Vancouver substitute Kekuta Manneh torched his way to the touch line on the left side, playing the ball back through the area that rolled untouched to the top of the box. Vancouver DF Steven Beitashour ran onto it and sent a shot to the far corner that Pedro Morales redirected right in front of goal past a helpless Attinella.

Vancouver almost scored another in the 82nd minute if it wasn’t for another big save from Attinella. Vancouver jumped on the counter springing Manneh who sprinted nearly 60 yards with the ball into the area and blasted a right footed shot from the center of the box. Attinella made himself big and managed to block the shot that went out for a corner kick to keep Vancouver’s lead to one.

Real Salt Lake will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 30, when it hosts USL PRO’s Sacramento Republic FC in an exhibition match at Rio Tinto Stadium at 7:30 p.m. MT.
