Barefield, Collette Debut For Utah In Win Over Prairie View A&M

Sedrick Barefield and David Collette suited up for Utah at last in the Utes’ win against overmatched Prairie View A&M on Saturday.

SALT LAKE CITY—Sedrick Barefield and David Collette suited up for Utah at last in the Utes’ 92-60 win against overmatched Prairie View A&M on Saturday.  Barefield scored 18 points in 29 minutes, while Collette, earning a start, dished out 11 points and collected nine rebounds across 17 minutes.

Collette had his way against undersized Panthers (2-10, 1-9 away) big men in the key, helping the Utes (7-2, 7-1 home) win in the paint 50 points to 22. He was quick to collect fouls early in the game, including a blocking foul on the first possession, but properly channeled his physicality in the second half, picking up only three for the game.

Barefield showed willingness to shoot from range, air-balling his first three-point attempt, but made five of his final seven attempts from the arc, a team-high this season. The sophomore transfer facilitated the Utes’ offense, handling the ball the majority of the time and showing no hesitation to lead the team on the floor and in the huddle.

“They’re two dynamic players,” said head coach Larry Krystkowiak. Arguably one of our better post players in Dave. Our own guys were bouncing off him at times. He’s a pretty solid rock inside, posts hard, and has played a lot of Division I basketball.  Sedrick gives you a little dynamic look. He’s still finding his way in Division I. Having a couple guys like that, I think offensively, we were able to hold ourselves a little bit more accountable.”

The Utes added two impact players to their roster that will rightly demand significant playing time, and will squeeze minutes out of the rest of the team.  Krystkowiak noted, “It’s a good motivator for coaches to have a little more depth.  When things aren’t getting done on the court, there’s nothing like playing time that gets people’s attention.”

Utah was efficient and effective offensively, shooting 59.3% from the floor, including 49.8% from downtown. The Utes reciprocated the effort on the defensive end, holding the Panthers to 38.1% shooting, and just 10.5% from three-point range.

Junior forward Kyle Kuzma finished with 18 points, 15 rebounds, and six assists in another triple-double-chasing effort.  In all, five Utes scored in double-digits.

Saturday’s game was the final home matchup for Utah in 2016, as the Utes will head to Hawaii for the Diamond Head Classic next week to close out non-conference play.
