SALT LAKE CITY—The University of Utah held its annual Red-White spring football game at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The White team, led by freshman quarterback Tyler Huntley, beat the Red squad 14-7.
Huntley finished throwing for 233 yards for one touchdown, completing 17-of-27 passes. Sophomore wide receiver Caleb Repp finished with 96 yards on five catches from Huntley, including a touchdown pass of 36 yards in the third quarter. Huntley and Repp also connected for a 33-yard reception in the first quarter.
Junior quarterback Brandon Cox completed 17-of-31 passes for 146 yards. He connected with receiver Tyrone Smith for Smith’s lone reception of 31 yards. Tight end Chad Hekking caught seven Cox passes for 63 yards.
Another standout in the game was senior walk-on wide receiver Tyler Cooperwood, who caught four passes for 58 yards in addition to a four-yard rush.
Junior linebacker Christian Drews had ten tackles for the White squad. Freshman linebacker responded with seven tackles for his Red square. But junior college transfer defensive end Kendall Huey exploded for three sacks on Cox.
Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham noted that senior center Hiva Lutui sustained an injury in Tuesday’s practice that will sideline him until October. Lutui was in attendance at the game, wearing a knee brace and supported on crutches.
This concludes Utah’s spring football session. Position battles, especially at quarterback, wide receiver, offensive line, and linebacker, will continue into fall football camp.
