It’s been a busy week so far for Real Salt Lake. Monday, just hours after Manchester United announced Salt Lake City as a stop on The Unmissable Tour 2017, Real Salt Lake announced that the club had parted ways with Head Coach Jeff Cassar. Now today, they announced the details of Manchester United’s visit. Real Salt Lake will play Manchester United in a friendly at Rio Tinto Stadium on Monday, July 17, 2017. Manchester United is expected to bring their full squad including Wayne Rooney, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba, and David de Gea.
Manchester United will also be playing in Los Angeles, Santa Clara, and Washington D.C. Man United is expected to make another stop in North America but have yet to announce the destination. United has made North America a regular stop on their summer tours over the years, including a match in 2014 against Real Madrid at Michigan Stadium where over 109,000 spectators gathered to watch the European giants clash. In United’s last two visits to the U.S., the club has seen more than half a million supporters at games.
Estimated to have over eight million supporters in the U.S., Manchester United is one of the most popular and iconic clubs in the world and will be just the second European team to play Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium. Last summer RSL hosted Inter Milan, falling 2-1 after a stunning back-heel goal from Stevan Jovetic in stoppage time. RSL also hosted the 2009 MLS All-Star Game at Rio Tinto Stadium against Premier League side Everton F.C. Manchester United recently won the EFL Cup, sits at 5th in the Premier League, and are in the quarterfinals of UEFA Europa League.
Tickets for the match will be available to season ticket holders first on March 28th, then go public.
Real Salt Lake’s next match is Sat. March 25 against New York Red Bulls at 2PM MST. Pre-game begins at 1PM on ESPN700.
