Toto is an American rock band formed in 1977 in Los Angeles, California. Known for their polished, melodic sound and skilled musicianship, Toto gained fame with their blend of rock, pop, jazz, and elements of progressive and symphonic music. The band was initially made up of a group of highly talented session musicians, including David Paich (keyboards), Steve Lukather (guitar, vocals), Jeff Porcaro (drums), and brothers Mike (bass) and Steve Porcaro (keyboards, synthesizers). Toto's breakthrough came with their 1978 self-titled debut album, but they achieved global success with their 1982 album Toto IV, which featured the smash hits "Africa" and "Rosanna." Toto IV went on to win multiple Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, and solidified the band as one of the most successful rock bands of the 1980s. "Africa" in particular has become one of their most enduring and beloved songs. Throughout their career, Toto continued to release albums and tour, maintaining a reputation for strong musicianship and catchy, radio-friendly songs. Their music includes a wide variety of styles, from soft rock and AOR to more intricate jazz-influenced arrangements. Despite lineup changes over the years—most notably the deaths of drummer Jeff Porcaro in 1992 and bassist Mike Porcaro in 2015—Toto has continued to perform and record new music, retaining a loyal fanbase. Their legacy is marked by timeless hits, including "Hold the Line," "Georgy Porgy," and "I'll Be Over You," as well as their profound influence on the sound of 1980s pop and rock music.
