On April 26th of 2011, Real Salt Lake came about as closes as any MLS Squad in recent memory to winning the CONCACAF Champions League Title, but fell just short on a 1-0 final to Monterrey at Rio Tinto Stadium. If you’d like to see/remember how close they came, here’s the link.
It’s hard to believe it’s been more than 4 years since that epic final, now more than four years later RSL makes it’s 3rd trip to Champions League this fall. On Monday night we found out who the Claret and Cobalt would face to begin another run towards a CONCACAF Title.
The Draw for the 2015-16 Champions League Tournament was unveiled in Miami on Monday night. Here’s a link to the video and full draw of the 24 team tournament, who’s opening rounds begin and run August to October.
Real Salt Lake was placed in Group G with Santa Tecla FC from El Salvador and C.S.D Municipal from Guatemala. There will be 4 total matches both home and away for RSL, the dates still to be determined. RSL’s opponents are a real contrast in longevity and experience. Santa Tecla is a club that was founded in 2007 and won it’s first league title this year, while Municipal has been a Central American Power since 1936 and have won 29 league titles and 1 CONCACAF Championship in 1974.
