Jazz interested in Otto Porter

Shams Charania of the Athletic reported Wednesday that the Washington Wizards are shopping forward Otto Porter, and the Utah Jazz had previously expressed interested in the 25 year old shooter. The Jazz were originally linked to Porter two summers ago, as the team awaited Gordon Hayward’s decision in free agency.

The Jazz missed out on Porter due to the delay in Hayward’s decision making.

Porter is a versatile 6’8 forward, with the ability to defend multiple positions, and spread the floor, shooting 40% from the three point line this year. That number jumps to 43% over the last three seasons.

To land Porter, the Jazz would have to send out one of Derrick Favors or Ricky Rubio, and could potentially send out both if they were getting an additional piece back, though it seems unlikely the Jazz would part with two starters midway through the season.

Porter is owed $27M next season, and has a player option of $28M for the 2020-21 season that he’s likely to pick up, eating up a significant part of the Jazz potential free agent space this summer.

Porter makes sense for the Jazz, who value low ego, high versatility players, and are still in need of another shooter after the Kyle Korver trade. The Jazz could prefer to trade for Porter, rather than go into the summer hoping one of the many prized free agents would choose Salt Lake over another major city.
