The 2014 Major League Baseball World Series gets underway tonight in Kansas City as the Kansas City Royals take on the San Francisco Giants. This is a World Series with 2 Wild Card teams which shows it is all about getting hot at the right time. If you get into the playoffs you have a chance, and that is what both the San Francisco Giants and the Kansas City Royals have.
This should be a great World Series. The Kansas City Royals have not lost yet in the playoffs as they beat the Oakland A’s in the Wild Card Game, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the ALDS, and the Baltimore Orioles in the ALCS. The San Francisco Giants come into the World Series beating the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Wild Card Game, the Washington Nationals in the NLDS, and the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLCS. The Giants have only lost twice in the playoffs. Most of the playoff games this year have been close, there have not been any real blowout games. That should continue with this series. The Royals came into the postseason without a lot of power numbers, but that has changed. The Royals have shown great defense, their outfielders are performing great in the outfield, making spectacular catches. The Giants have had great pitching performances, timely hitting, and great defensive plays as well. The matchup between the 2 teams appears to be equal. As in every playoff series, it will come down to the team that takes advantage of the other team’s mistakes.
Madison Bumgarner is the starting pitcher for the Giants. He is 2-1 in 4 starts this postseason including a complete game shutout in the Wild Card Game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. His ERA this postseason is 1.42. The Kansas City royals will be sending James Shields to the mound. He is 1-0 in 3 starts with an ERA of 5.63 this postseason. He has given up 10 earned runs in 3 starts. Pitching advantage for Game 1 goes to the Giants. However, the game still needs to be played, you never know what can happen during October baseball.
