Real Salt Lake head coach Mike Petke joined the media on Tuesday to discuss the end of the 2018 season and the decisions made on player contracts.
RSL picked up the options for GK Andrew Putna, DF Danilo Acosta, DF Nick Besler, FW Corey Baird, FW Joao Plata, FW Sebastian Saucedo, and FW Jefferson Savarino.
RSL declined contract options for GK Connor Sparrow, DF Tony Beltran, DF David Horst, DF Taylor Peay, DF Demar Phillips, MF Jose Hernandez, MF Luke Mulholland, MF Sunny, FW Ricky Lopez-Espin, and FW Luis Silva.
Goalkeepers Nick Rimando and Alex Horwath; defenders Justen Glad, Adam Henley, Aaron Herrera, Brooks Lennon, Nedum Onuoha, and Marcelo Silva; midfielders Kyle Beckerman, Damir Kreilach, Pablo Ruiz, and Albert Rusnak; and forward Jordan Allen all have guaranteed contracts.
If an agreement is not made between RSL and a player who is out of contract or had his option declined, these are their options:
- Hernandez, Lopez-Espin, and Peay would be eligible for the 2018 MLS Waiver Draft.
- Mulholland, Phillips, and Sunny would be eligible for the 2018 Re-Entry Process.
- Beltran, Horst, and Silva would be eligible for MLS Free Agency or Re-Entry Process.
Shawn Barry has been with his national team since the end of the season and has not met with the club to review his contract.
