Pac-12 moves to 20-game conference schedule in men’s basketball

The conference announces the change for the 2020-2021 season.

The Pac-12 Conference announced a 20-game league schedule for the 2020-2021 season.

“Strategic scheduling – both conference and non-conference – are critical to the strength and well-being of any league,” said Oregon State Vice President and Director of Athletics Scott Barnes in a statement. “Our Athletics Directors, head coaches and league administrators are all in alignment that an increase to 20 Conference games is the best course of action for our league moving forward.”

Utah coach Larry Krystkowiak is on the record as in favor of the move.

The move will limit options in non-conference scheduling with more league games on tap. If last season’s historically bad out-of-conference finish repeats itself, going to 20 games won’t affect the Pac-12’s perception. The quality within will need to improve.

The Pac-12 will address whether it will require non-con enhancements at a later date.

The league delivered three teams into the NCAA Tournament last season – Oregon, Arizona State, and Washington.
