2023-24 Season Schedule Unveiled for Runnin’ Utes

SAN FRANCISCO – The Pac-12 Conference unveiled its weekly pairing list and site designations for the upcoming 2023-24 campaign on Thursday while the Utah men’s basketball program finalized all but one game for its non-conference schedule.

Specific dates and times for each of the Pac-12 games will be announced at a later time after selections by the league’s television partners are finalized. Meanwhile, the Pac-12 Tournament will be held inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., for the seventh-straight year from March 13-16.

The non-conference slate features seven home games inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center with four of those opponents having played in some sort of postseason tournament in 2022-23. Overall, the Utes are 160-141 against the non-con opponents and 101-56 when playing those teams at home while going 2-1 on the road against St. Mary’s – their lone true road game.

For the third-consecutive season, the Utes will host Westminster for their lone exhibition game on Wednesday, Nov. 1, inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center ahead of the season-opener.

Utah then opens up the 2023-24 campaign at home on Monday, Nov. 6 against an Eastern Washington team that captured the Big Sky regular-season championship last season. The Eagles also went on to play in the NIT, opening up with a first-round victory of No. 4 seed Washington State before falling to top-seeded Oklahoma State.

The Runnin’ Utes will then welcome in the Highlanders from UC Riverside, who went 22-12 last season with a third-place finish in the Big West Conference, on Friday, Nov. 10. It was UCR’s first season with 20-plus wins under the direction of then fourth-year head coach Mike Magpayo.

Smith and the Utes will then head east the following week for the 2023 edition of the Shriners Children’s Hospital Charleston Classic (Nov. 16-19) where it’ll open with Wake Forest on Thursday, Nov. 16. The opening round game between the Runnin’ Utes and Demon Deacons will be the fifth game all-time between the two programs and first on a neutral floor. Utah and Wake Forest will play Houston or Towson depending on the result of its game on Friday, Nov. 17, and will have a day off on Saturday before playing the final game of the tournament ton Sunday, Nov. 19.

Utah get tested on the road when it kicks off the first game of a home-and-home series with St. Mary’s, on Monday, Nov. 27. The Gaels have been a perennial contender in the West Coast Conference and NCAA Tournament under the direction of long-time head coach Randy Bennett. SMC has posted 20-plus wins in 15-consecutive season, minus the shortened COVID-19 season and advanced to the second-round of March Madness last season before falling to the eventual national champions.

Southern Utah is first up on the docket as Utah hosts four-straight home games in the friendly confines of the Jon M. Huntsman Center, starting with the Utes and Thunderbirds squaring off on Tuesday, Dec. 5.

Utah then welcomes BYU for the 264th edition of the rivalry on Saturday, Dec. 9, as the Runnin’ Utes look to snap their three-game skid against the Cougars in front of the Ute faithful. Utah Valley heads up I-15 for a Dec. 16 match-up against the Utes under the direction of newly head coach Todd Phillips – who was promoted after the departure of former NBA Champion Mark Madsen after leading the Wolverines to the 2022-23 WAC Regular Season Championship.

The Utes then wrap up non-conference action with Bellarmine on Wednesday, Dec. 20. That game will serve as the first meeting ever between the two programs.
