Arizona State Defeats Utah in Overtime 19-16

TEMPE, Ariz. – Junior running back Devontae Booker rushed for 146 yards and caught a touchdown pass, but the No. 18 University of Utah football team fell in overtime at No. 15/14 Arizona State, 19-16, in a Pac-12 Conference South Division contest Saturday night in Sun Devil Stadium.

No. 18/18 Utah (6-2, 3-2 Pac-12) held a 2-0 advantage in turnover margin over Arizona State, while the Ute defense came up with four more sacks and added seven more tackles for loss.

During its first offensive possession in overtime, Utah picked up seven yards on a pair of Booker carries, but Andy Phillips missed a 37-yard field goal before ASU converted its game-winning field goal to pick up the 19-16 victory.

Booker turned in his fifth consecutive 100-yard rushing performance, all against Pac-12 foes, with 146 yards on 37 carries to go with two receptions out of the back field for six yards and one touchdown. It was his first receiving touchdown of the season and ninth overall.

Quarterback Travis Wilson completed 12 of 22 pass attempts for 57 yards and one touchdown. He also gained 44 rushing yards on 14 attempts.

Junior Tim Patrick had three catches for 33 yards, while tight end Westlee Tonga also had three catches for 11 yards.

Senior defensive end Nate Orchard tied for team-high honors with 10 tackles and a sack. He has 55 tackles this season and 12.0 sacks this season.

Marcus Williams turned in a career-high 10 tackles and also had an interception.

Linebacker Gionni Paul intercepted his fourth pass of the season and also had seven tackles. Sophomore defensive end Hunter Dimick also had seven tackles to go with a team-high two sacks. He now second on the team with 10.5 sacks this season.

Defensive tackle Viliseni Fauonuku registered a pair of tackles for loss, while cornerbacks Dominique Hatfield, Justin Thomas and Davion Orphey each broke up two passes apiece.

Phillips went 3-for-4 on the night with makes from 50, 44 and 36 yards and a miss from 37 yards in overtime. His first field goal of the night tied his season long, a 50-yarder in the second quarter. His 50-yard field goal was his third career 50+ field goal. He is 11-of-13 from 40+ yards this season and 17-for-20 overall.

Punter Tom Hackett averaged 47.1 yards per punt, including dropping two punts inside the 20-yard line and two punts of 50+ yards. He dropped a punt at the five-yard line with 2:30 left in the game. He turned in a 59-yard punt on his first effort of the night.

Senior Kaelin Clay had 71 yards on kick returns (3 returns) and 22 yards on punt returns (1 return).

The Ute defense came up with a red zone stop on defense to limit the Sun Devils to a 20-yard field goal after the first drive of the game.

Wilson found Kenneth Scott on a six-yard route for Utah’s initial first down of the contest and rushed nine yards to pick up a second. Unfortunately, the Utes were unable to pick up a third, but the Utah defense held again and limited ASU to a second field goal, this time from 45 yards, for a 6-0 lead.

Paul picked off ASU quarterback Taylor Kelly off a deflection on fourth down for his fourth interception of the season to stop ASU’s third drive. Wilson then rushed for a first down into ASU territory and Booker gashed a 12-yard run up the middle to set up Phillips’ 50-yard field to cut Utah’s deficit in half, 6-3.

ASU responded with its first touchdown of the game on the ensuing drive to claim a 13-3 lead.

Dimick’s eighth sack of the season on third down of ASU’s sixth drive forced a 50-yard missed field goal that gave Utah possession on its own 32.

Booker carried the ball three times on Utah’s next drive and Wilson scrambled to his right to find Patrick down the field for the second first down of the drive. Wilson connected with Patrick on a crossing pattern again for seven more yards to convert a third down chance that put Phillips in position to convert a 36-yard field goal to make the game 13-6 heading into halftime.

After taking a touchback to start the second half, Wilson found Patrick for the third time in the game for 12 yards and Utah picked up two more first downs before a 32-yard rush by Wilson moved the Utes down to the ASU 8. Wilson then ran for four more yards before finding Booker in the left flat for a four-yard touchdown reception to tie the game for the first time at 13-13.

Fauonuku came up with his second sack of the season that helped Utah force ASU to put for the first time in the contest that Clay returned 22 yards to the Sun Devil 47-yard line, the Utes’ best field position of the night.

From there, back-to-back long rushes by Booker up the middle of the ASU defense, totaling 19 yards, put the Utes in position for Phillips’ go-ahead field goal of the game from 44 yards that gave Utah the lead for the first time, 16-13.

Dimick then came up with his second sack to stop ASU’s first drive of the fourth quarter.

The Ute defense held the Sun Devil offense at the Utah 13-yard line for a 30-yard ASU field goal that tied the game for the second time, 16-16.

Clay turned up a 42-yard kickoff return that gave the Ute offense good field position to begin its next drive. Wilson found Tonga for a five-yard reception, Booker ran for three yards and made a one-handed catch on an option pitch to pick up Utah’s initial first down of the drive. Unfortunately, the Ute drive stalled, but Hackett was able to pin the Sun Devils on their own 5-yard line.

Orchard sacked Kelly on a third-and-10 during ASU’s two-minute drill to force a Sun Devil punt and then Williams intercepted ASU’s last-second `hail mary’ attempt to force overtime.

The Utes return to Salt Lake City to host No. 5 Oregon on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 8 p.m. MT. The action in Rice-Eccles Stadium will be televised live on ESPN.
