SALT LAKE CITY—Utah Football announced safeties coach Morgan Scalley has been named defensive coordinator following the retirement of John Pease. Scalley has coached the safeties position since 2008, as well as being the recruiting coordinator for the last seven seasons.
Pease, 72, a former longtime NFL assistant coach, led Utah’s defense to the top 3 in the Pac-12 in scoring defense, total defense, rushing defense, and pass efficiency defense. He also coached at Utah for two seasons from 2009-10.
Scalley is a former second-team All-American and Mountain West co-Defensive Player of the Year as a safety for the Utes. He played on Utah’s 2004 Fiesta Bowl team, and joined the coaching staff in 2006. He was given a full-time coaching position in 2008.
Scalley will continue to coach the safeties, but a different coach will be appointed to oversee recruiting and the special teams.
