Notes from day 4 of Utah fall camp.
Kyle Whittingham was pleased on the fourth day of Utah football camp as the Utes showed increased physicality and tempo.
“There is no shortage of passion and energy on this team,” Whittingham said. “They get after it. In fact, you got to reign them in a little bit. These guys know how to go to work.”
Quarterback separation
From what Whittingham has witnessed on the field, he believes Troy Williams and Tyler Huntley are separating themselves from Cooper Bateman – at least that was the case before today.
“We’ll watch the film today and see if that gap closed at all,” Whittingham said. “But Troy had a very good day yesterday, that was his best day yesterday.”
Williams continues to look ahead instead of over his shoulder as he works on improving his game and becoming a more vocal leader – something he feels Whittingham wants to see more of from him.
“It’s a good competition,” Williams said. “Those are two good quarterbacks. We’ve been battling for a while now so it’s a great competition.”
Running backs
Last season the Utes struggled when it came to health at the running backs position. With a new season approaching and last year in the rear-view mirror, Armand Shyne and Zack Moss are once again back in the mix of things.
“Zack Moss is not a compliment to Armand,” Whittingham said. “He’s pushing him hard. It’s neck and neck right now. Armand’s maybe got the edge, but Zack is much improved over last year, and you’d expect that just with a year experience in the program, but Zack Moss is doing everything right. He’s going to be hard to keep off the field.”
