Utah Football announced the 2016 team captains via social media on Saturday evening.
The offensive captains are quarterback Troy Williams and lineman JJ Dielman. The defensive captains are cornerback Dominique Hatfield and end Hunter Dimick. The special teams captain is safety Jason Thompson. None of the captains have held the position before.
Williams has yet to play a game snap for the University of Utah, and won the starting quarterback job just last week. Dielman is a veteran of Utah’s offensive line and a key contributor to the offensive success Utah has had up front.
Hatfield missed Utah’s opening game of the 2015 season due to a suspension after legal issues following aggravated robbery and misdemeanor theft charges, which were dropped. The cornerback finished the 2015 campaign with four interceptions and 33 tackles.
Dimick has been a regular contributor to Sack Lake City, but missed several games last season due to injury. The senior comes into 2015 with 95 career tackles, including 15 sacks.
New special teams captain Jason Thompson is coming off ten tackles in 2015 in seven game appearances. The quarterback-turned-defensive-back is also competing for playing time in the Utes’ vaunted defensive backfield.
The Utes will begin the 2016 season against Southern Utah on September 1st at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
