Utah Utes Fall Football Camp: Day 7

The Utes held their first scrimmage of fall camp at Rice-Eccles Stadium. A strong showing from the defense and punt returners.

Today was the first scrimmage of fall camp for the Utes. The media didn’t see the first or second strings, but only the third and fourth strings and some punt returns.

Of the punt returns, two were returned for touchdowns by Cory Butler and Britain Covey. Butler got around the edge and sped down the sideline for the score. Covey was his normal evasive self, going down the middle and juking defenders left and right before finally breaking through.

Everything else we know is from player and coach interviews and the stat sheet.

The quarterbacks didn’t have a great day from the numbers:
Travis Wilson: 6-17, 55 yds, 0 TD
Kendal Thompson: 8-20, 85 yds, 0 TD
Chase Hansen: 5-9, 23 yds, 1 TD

Hansen’s TD was a 13-yd pass to Bubba Poole.

There were three interceptions, one from each of the QBs. Picking it off on the other end were Andre Godfrey, Jordan Fogal, and Cory Butler.

Sacks on the day came courtesy of Jason Fanaika, Filipo Mokofisi, and Viliseni Fauonuku. There were no fumbles.

The hot receivers of the day were Siaosi Wilson (2 rec, 26 yds), Harrison Handley (2 rec, 39 yds), Britain Covey (4 rec, 24 yds), TE Caleb Repp (3 rec, 27 yds), and Bubba Poole (3 rec, 18 yds, 1 TD).

Kyle Whittingham said Cory Butler will finish out the week with reps at corner, and they’ll make a final decision on his position next week.

After the scrimmage was the first event of the fall camp Olympics. Players and Pac-12 analysts took turns trying to kick a short field goal. I’ll just say it’s a good thing the Utes have Andy Phillips on roster.
