Utes Finish 2014 Season with Win over CSU

The University of Utah Football Team reached a bowl game for the first time in 2011 when they faced Boise State in the Las Vegas Bowl.  After the Utes finished the regular season with an 8-4 record, the Utes returned to Sin City to face former Mountain West Conference foe Colorado State.  The Rams finished the season with a 10-2 record and entered the Bowl matchup with Utah without their Head Coach Jim McElwain who left CSU to become the Head Coach at Florida.  Entering this game for Utah has a lot of fans (and media) wondering whether on not Quarterback Travis Wilson will transfer after all of the QB Controversy with Kendal Thompson.  Well, Travis made a statement in the Bowl game as he led the Utes to a dominating 45-10 win over Colorado State.

The Utes came out of the gates firing on all cylinders as Travis Wilson started the first drive for Utah with an 8 yard run to put the Utes up 7-0.  The Utes would then answer on the next drive as Wilson connected with Delshawn McCellon for 16 yards and put the Utes up 14-0 before CSU would get on the board with a 39 yard TD pass from Garrett Grayson.  That wasn’t all of the scores in the first quarter.  The Utes would come into the next drive up 14-7 and on the first play of the drive, Devontae Booker ran for a 60 yard touchdown and the Utes were in command with a 21-7 lead.  CSU would convert a Field Goal before the end of the first quarter to trail 21-10.  Andy Phillips provided the only score in the second quarter and the Utes were up 24-10 at the half.  Travis Wilson would get the first touchdown of the second half on a 15 yard run.  Then the game got out of hand as CSU turned the ball over twice in the fourth quarter and the Utes would score two touchdowns on those turnovers.  The first touchdown was on a 12 yard run from Travis Wilson and the last touchdown for the Utes in 2014 was a 10 yard run from Bubba Poole.

Travis Wilson had a great game running the ball with 11 carries for 91 yards and 3 touchdowns, he had a so-so game throwing the ball with 17 of 26 passing for 158 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception.  Devontae Booker ended his 2014 coming out party with a bang running the ball 26 times for 162 yards and 1 touchdown.

Kaelin Clay ended his Utah career with 4 catches for 63 yards against CSU.  Westlee Tonga ended his Utah career with 1 catch for 9 yards.

It was a season where the Utes exceeded expectations.  Most experts had them with 6 wins because of their hard schedule but the Utes managed to pick up 9 wins.  It will be interesting to see which players will transfer and if there will be any changes to the Utah coaching staff.
