RSL Trades Saborio to DC United

ESPN 700 has learned that Real Salt Lake has traded Alvaro Saborio to DC United in exchange for Midfielder Luis Silva.  Saborio appeared in 14 matches with the Claret and Cobalt this season scoring 3 goals.  Sabo arrived in Salt Lake City in 2010 and has scored 63 goals and 13 assists in 127 MLS matches through 6 seasons with RSL and is the club’s all-time leading scorer.  Sabo scored 79 goals in 158 matches across all competitions.  Alvaro’s last MLS game that he appeared in was June 7th against Colorado.  The last game that he scored in was May 23rd against NYCFC. His last appearance in all competitions was on June 16th in US Open Cup action when he subbed in for Olmes Garcia in the 83rd minute.  Saborio has been away with “personal reasons” or international duty with Costa Rica in the CONCACAF Gold Cup since that match.

“Alvaro was a legend with this club and we thank him for his time spent with RSL,” RSL Technical Director Craig Waibel said.  “But the time has come for us to evolve as a club and this trade is a great opportunity to add a talented player in Luis Silva who can bring a lot to this team.”

Luis Silva is a 26 year old midfielder.  He was the fourth overall pick in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft by Toronto FC after playing collegiately at UC-Santa Barbara.  He finished his first full season with DC United in 2014 and finished with 11 goals, tying former RSL striker Fabian Espindola for the team high.  He also had 4 assists in 27 appearances (22 starts) for the club.  Silva is expected to arrive in SLC on Thursday.
