The Bullpen – October 8, 2014 Edition

The National League Championship is set as the San Francisco Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals move on.  The National League will be represented by either the Giants or the Cardinals for the 5th consecutive season in the World Series.

The San Francisco Giants defeat the Washington Nationals in Game 4, 3-2.  The Giants scored their 3 runs by a bases loaded walk, a RBI groundout, and on a wild pitch.  Anyway you can score, take it.  Hunter Pence had an outstanding catch in right field, and the Giants’ pitchers outperformed the Nationals’ pitchers.  With the Giants win, both Wild Card teams advance to the League Championship Series for the American and National Leagues.

The St. Louis Cardinals get by the Los Angeles Dodgers and Clayton Kershaw 3-2 as they will have home field advantage in the NLCS which gets underway on Saturday.  Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers was pitching outstanding through 6 innings as he held the Cardinals scoreless.  However, in the 7th inning he gave up a 3-run homerun to Matt Adams, which ended up being the difference in the game.

The National League Championship Series should be great as both teams come into the series with outstanding pitching.  Both teams have played well defensively.  It will come down to which team can take advantage of the other team’s mistakes.  The Giants did that against the Nationals, will they be able to do it against the Cardinals?  Adam Wainwright will get the start for the Cardinals in Game 1.  He is a fantastic postseason pitcher, but as we have seen in the playoffs this year, anything can happen.

The American League Championship Series begins Friday night in Baltimore at 6:00 PM as the Orioles take on the Kansas City Royals.  The game will be heard on ESPN 700.
