Pantera was an influential American heavy metal band formed in Arlington, Texas, in 1981. The band’s original lineup consisted of guitarist Dimebag Darrell, drummer Vinnie Paul, bassist Rex Brown, and vocalist Phil Anselmo. Pantera initially started as a glam metal band but became known for pioneering the groove metal and thrash metal genres in the 1990s with albums like Cowboys from Hell (1990), Vulgar Display of Power (1992), and Far Beyond Driven (1994).
The band’s music is characterized by heavy, aggressive riffs, fast tempos, and Anselmo’s distinctive vocal style, which ranges from melodic singing to harsh growls. Pantera was widely credited with revitalizing the heavy metal scene during the 1990s and influencing countless other bands within the genre.
Despite their success, Pantera faced internal conflicts, particularly between Anselmo and the other members. These tensions led to their breakup in 2003. Tragically, in 2004, Dimebag Darrell was murdered while performing with his new band, Damageplan. Pantera’s legacy continues to influence metal bands and fans around the world.
