Utah And BYU In The Pac-16? It Could Happen

Would Ute fans be okay revitalizing the Utah-BYU rivalry if the Cougars were in the same conference again?

The Big 12 announced this week that it will not expand its conference, which leaves BYU out of a Power 5 conference for the foreseeable future.  Things are merry for Utah in the Pac-12, with newer and bigger things to worry about in conference play.  Many Ute fans have moved on from their own personal rivalry with BYU, and scheduling the Cougars for major sports isn’t as much of a priority as it used to be.

But with the Big 12 deciding not to expand, and Texas and Oklahoma always looking for a way to slurp up some cash, the conference looks more unstable than it ever has.  Many in and around college football project and expect four 16-team super-conferences some years down the line, and the Big 12 looks like it may be gobbled up and looted in the process.  The SEC, ACC, Big Ten, and Pac-12 will likely be fighting and courting schools from the Big 12, with a few open slots to fill out the 16 teams.

BYU has been an attractive option for expansion, as well as Houston, Cincinnati, and others.  With BYU being in the west side of the country, the Pac-12 will undoubtedly consider the Cougars in this scenario.  At least Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports thinks that may be the case, as he said on Friday’s Bill Riley Show.
