The Tokyo Games are proving to be so unpopular in Japan that major sponsors are starting to drop out.
On Monday, it was announced that Toyota – one of Japan’s best-known companies – was pulling all its Japanese TV ads from the Olympics, despite being one of the major sponsors for the Games.
The automaker even announced that its top executives would not attend Friday’s Opening Ceremonies, saying the event “has not gained the public’s understanding”.
Many Japanese officials and citizens have criticized the decision to go forward with the Games, as the country struggles to keep the COVID-19 pandemic under control.
