Utah offensive lineman Isaac Asiata was awarded the Morris Trophy on Tuesday night
Utah offensive lineman Isaac Asiata was awarded the Morris Trophy on Tuesday night, an award voted on by the current lineman starters in the Pac-12 Conference. The award is maybe the most true testament of excellence, as offensive linemen vote for the top defensive lineman, and defensive linemen choose the top offensive lineman.
Asiata is the third Ute to win the award and first offensive lineman (DT Star Lotulelei in 2011, DE Nate Orchard in 2014).
“I was very excited to hear that,” said head coach Kyle Whittingham. “Jeff [Rudy, Utah director of football operations] told me that during practice, came out here and said that Isaac had won that award…He’s been with us for a lot of years, and hard work and perseverance has paid off for him.”
Stanford junior defensive end Solomon Thomas was the Morris Trophy award winner on the defensive side of the ball.
With the award, Asiata joins the ranks of such Pac-12 offensive linemen David Yankey (Stanford, 2011), Xavier Su’a-Filo (UCLA, 2012), Andrus Peat (Stanford, 2013), and Joshua Garnett (Stanford, 2015), who have been given the honor during Utah’s time in the conference.
